British Museum Partners With LaCollection In Creating NFTs From Renowned Art Masterpieces
The British Museum is beginning to expand into the developing field of NFT by collaborating with a new platform to create digital postcards of Katsushika Hokusai’s paintings, which will be available for purchase online.
‘The Hokusai Postcards’ which were co-produced by the British Museum, are intended to transfer the work of one of Japan’s most famous painters into the digital world.
More than 200 Hokusai NFT artworks, including digital reproductions of well-known prints by the artist, such as Under the Wave, Off Kanagawa, Clear Day with a Southern Breeze, and Ejiri in Suruga Province, will be available for purchase online.
Additionally, lesser-known pieces, such as drawings from the newly re-discovered The Great Big Picture Book of Everything, will also be available for purchase.

The NFTs Will Be Offered At Set Prices
“We are very excited to partner with LaCollection and explore innovative ways to engage with the growing NFT market,” said Craig Bendle, licencing manager at the British Museum.
As a museum, it is critical for it to constantly adapt to new markets and develop new methods of engaging individuals who may not otherwise be reached via conventional channels. Many individuals are unfamiliar with the NFT sector; and so enabling them to join the market in a simple and clear way is very exciting.
Jean-Sébastien Beaucamps, co-founder and CEO of LaCollection, said that it was an “honour” to work with the British Museum on this project.
“We hope that the platform will engage new audiences, particularly those who have never visited or interacted with the British Museum’s enormous collection before, and that it will give them the chance to explore the museum’s collection in new and fascinating ways,” he added.

In July 2021, the Whitworth Gallery became the first museum to offer NFTs as its exhibition products. The NFT were created using William Blake’s The Ancient of Days, which is one of the most frequently reprinted works in the gallery’s collection.
